Watching The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is like playing a race car video game. The movie, which opens on Wednesday, July 14, is filled with sudden, unexpected twists and turns.
The story involves a wizard named Balthazar Blake who has some unbelievable news for a young, geeky physics student named Dave Stutler. Balthazar, played by Nicolas Cage (from National Treasure) tells him that he is a descendent of Merlin the Magician and is the only person who can save the world from the evil sorceress Morgana.
The role of Dave is played by Jay Baruchel (whom you may recognize as the unique voice of Hiccup in the animated film How to Train your Dragon). Balthazar explains to Dave that he has searched for him for more than a thousand years so he can defeat Morgana and save the world.
Before they can do that, however, they must conquer Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina) and his arrogant apprentice Drake Stone (Toby Kebbel). Dave and Balthazar go through many magical adventures as they battle the villainous Morgana. During his journey, he has to overcome the most major distraction of all: the girl of his dreams.
Overall, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is an awesome movie experience! It is one of those movies that will have you on the edge of your seat. The story is engaging and the special effects are absolutely fascinating. The movie, itself, is a magical experience.
Nicolas Cage is perfect in his role as a sorcerer, and Jay Baruchel is very funny as an unwilling apprentice. But I have to say, some of the funniest moments involve Drake Stone, who plays a magician with a diva-like attitude. He is hilarious!
Although the movie has many twists, it is not confusing or hard to follow. It is actually the opposite: mesmerizing! I could still feel the magic after it was over.
I highly recommend this movie to people who enjoy sci-fi, action/adventure and comedy.
