In 2013 movie goers witnessed the release of The Purge, starring Ethan Hawke (Daybreakers 2009, Sinister 2012) and Lena Headley (Game of Thrones series) as James and Mary Sandin, leaving quite an impact. Written and directed by James DeMonaco (Skin Walkers 2006, Staten Island 2009) and produced along with others, by Michael Bay (Transformers movie series, Friday the 13th 2009), the two team up again for work on the film’s sequel The Purge: Anarchy released in theaters July 18th.

Set in the near future, the purge is a 24 hour period whereby anyone can commit any crime they like without recourse or punishment, though they cannot kill government officials and there are some restrictions on the type of weapons they use. The government – NFF (New Founding Fathers) have discovered that by allowing this to happen the crime rate has dropped significantly the rest of the year, there is less poverty, and people are happier. This effectively allows humans to ‘purge’ their sins and soul, thus making them a better person the rest of the year. The first movie shows what happens to the Sandin family during the purge, when they are meant to be protected by the very system that James designed. Those who have not seen it, it is not imperative to for viewing The Purge: Anarchy, although it does provide some background.

The Purge: Anarchy is set in 2023, unemployment is below 5%, there is almost no crime rate, and less people are living below the poverty line than ever before. It is the 21st of March, mere hours until the annual purge begins and everyone who is not purging is urged to lock down in their homes until it is over for obvious safety reasons.

Eva Sanchez (Carmen Ejogo: Away We Go 2009, Alex Cross 2012) is a waitress who lives at home with her sick father Papa Rico (John Beasley: Daddy’s Little Girls 2007, For Love of Amy 2009), and her daughter Cally (Zoë Soul: Reed Between the Lines, Prisoners 2013). Papa hates the purge and has told Eva and Cally that he is going to shut himself in his room for the evening, while they eat dinner and wait out the event until morning, as usual. Other characters Shane (Zach Gilford: Post Grad 2009, The Last Stand 2013) and Liz (Kiele Sanchez: 30 Days of Night: Dark Days 2010, Kingdom 2014) are a married couple whose relationship is on the rocks. They are on their way home in their car, well before the purge launches that evening. A former soldier, Sergeant Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo: Disconnect 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier 2014) prepares for the opposite, he is going to participate in the purge for his own personal reasons and nothing will get in his way.

They all go about their business, until unexpected events find each of them, in situations they had been preparing against. Eva and Cally discover that Eva’s father has sold himself to a wealthy family to kill during the purge to give them the money they need to get by and not worry about him. They accept that harshly, but when the purge comes right to their home, they have no choice but to run and fight. Meanwhile, Shane and Liz’s car has been tampered with and they find themselves smack bang in the middle of downtown, where most of the killings and trouble occurs, running for their lives. Sergeant Leo instead of heading closer to his intended mission, finds himself saving Eva, Cally, Shane and Liz and protecting all of them from a bunch of psycho killers and maniacs. This is where their stories merge. Not long into their joint nightmare, the group discovers that there could be something much more sinister behind the purge than what the public is told, but to discover the truth they are put in a horrific situation. Will they live or will their fight be all for nothing?

The Purge: Anarchy is much more than just a Horror Action movie about people killing other people; this has a deeper meaning behind it. Corporate greed, the needs of the wealthy overpowering, and the needs of the rest of the country, underlay this story, twisting and turning to create a terrifying look at the future of humanity. The film provides much more background about the city and how it got where it is. The Purge: Anarchy delivers just that, anarchy. Compelling and exciting, this is must watch for all Horror fans. CrypticRock scores this movie 5 out of 5.
