“No. I’ve never watched the Notebook.” Heads turned. The world spun into darkness. My friends couldn’t believe that I haven’t watched The Notebook before. The Notebook, the most famous of all the Nicholas Sparks’ book to film adaptations. Everyone who was anyone has watched this movie. All my friends tried to convince me into watching it, like their lives depended on it! “The Notebook is the meaning of love.” They said. “It teaches you about life.” “The Notebook is such a classic.” “How have you not seen the film?!” To be completely honest, I’ve always wanted to watch it but I just couldn’t be bothered to. It was such a burden for me to sit down for two hours to watch the film, especially a movie based on Nicholas Sparks’ book. But I still wanted to watch it because I needed to know what all the fuss was about. After almost a year of reluctance, I finally did it. I watched The Notebook.
From the very beginning, I loved how I already knew the plot of the movie. Being a Nicholas Sparks adaptation, one can just guess the plot. Boy meets girl. Boy and girl fall deeply in love. BOOM! A crisis happens that separates our two lovebirds but in the end they somehow managed to get back together because their love for each other was far too strong. Nothing could stop their love. Not distance, not illness not even death! You can imagine my reaction at the end of the film when Noah Calhoun, played by Ryan Gosling, and Allie Hamilton, played by Rachel McAdams did in fact end up together. Surprise, surprise.
I have to say that I was very fond of the characters of the movie. Noah Calhoun impressed me the most in the film. I was completely at awe when he dangerously hanged onto a Ferris wheel in order to get the attention of Allie Hamilton, a girl whom he literally just met two minutes ago. If that doesn’t scream creep – I mean love, I’m not sure what does. I was also amazed at how Noah actually built the dream house of a girl, who broke his heart into a million pieces, while knowing full well that she would never return to him. Obviously this is a man who was deeply troubled…with love.
Nevertheless, I personally think that The Notebook is a movie that everyone should watch at least once in their lives. I must confess, I didn’t understand the fuss over the movie and why everyone loved it so much but after watching it myself, I still don’t understand. The Notebook is definitely a must watch, whether you watch it for the plot or just for a laugh.
