Melissa McCarthy truly shines and also busts guts in more ways than one in this laugh out loud action/comedy about an underwhelming desk job simpleton turned secret agent. Susan Cooper (McCarthy) is the partner of dashingly deadly field agent Bradley Fine (Jude Law). When complications arise in a case with a deadly arms dealer, Cooper goes undercover in a chance to save the world and her pride.
This movie about spies could have mirrored the plot of any other action flick out there, and I sort of expected it to, yet it didn’t. The unique storyline and the strong supporting cast — Jason Statham was funny — if not the humor, certainly held my attention and kept me guessing until the ending credits.
The comedy was good fun throughout the entire movie, such fun in fact that the nearly filled-to-capacity theater rumbled with genuine belly laughs. Even my mom laughed, and I’ve heard her genuinely laugh about three times in my life.
However, at most parts the humor was skewed more towards the “sick” side because this movie was definitely rated R for good reason. It contained violence that is probably suitable for anyone who can handle watching the morning news, with the exception of a few scenes that might have bled (literally) a little into the “Scream” movies genre. Also expect lots of bad language and one too many seconds spent looking at male genitalia on the screen. With that said, none of the aforementioned distracted from the overall good-hearted, yet twisted humor that we all know and secretly love.
